"Out of the Mists?!?!? We could sure use a lifeform scanner and some scanner goggles. Anyone have any? How about a laser sight attachment for my rifle? I'd feel a lot better about our chances if we could detect these lifeforms at a safe distance. Maybe we can scrounge some up on short notice!"asks Kip.

"Blast it!!!! I need something thicker that this armor and a blade if we're going to be mixing it up with these creatures!" thinks Kip to himself.

It did not matter who Kip dealt with along the way, or how badly he needed such items from Clik, some items were just not to be found under these conditions.

Swamp

You've traveled roughly forty minutes to the north when you park your speeder bikes on a dry patch of land; the trees grow too close together to safely pilot it any further. Fog and trees obscure the sun this far into the swamp, creating a sense of eternal twilight. Countless insects, birds, and other creatures buzz, screech, and howl above. The surrounding mist limits visibility, and your scanners provide little usable information due to the concentration of life-forms ahead.

The entrance to this area of the swamp consists of intertwined dionaryll trees, a gnarled and knobby tree, only found on worlds in Jaga's Cluster, that grows hundreds of meters into the air. The trees stand thick, and their exposed roots are dense in this part of the swamp, with few openings large enough to walk through. Beyond the first line of trees, the swamp opens up with more areas of water, hanging vines, moss, and hundreds of buzzing insects.

The party slogs through the murky water, finding only occasional patches of solid ground rising above the waist-deep water.

swamp

"What was that recon group thinking venturing so deeply into this swamp? This far away, there's nothing in this swamp that would threaten our location," says Kip under his breath as he shakes his head. He then pauses to look around and draw his weapon, listening for any unusual movement. What attacked those men must be at least man-sized, I would think, he thinks to himself.

"Or in the trees." BX added, looking briefly aiming his rifle up the nearest tree.

"Lucky for us we've got lots of eyes between us to cover all the options," Joran said hopefully as they pushed further ahead.

Deeper into the swamp, the mists thicken, reducing visibility.

The mist counts as light cover at medium range and heavy cover at long range. Anything at extreme range or farther is completely concealed.

"Shhhh......It's TOO quiet!" hushes the green-skinned Twi'lek to the others as he takes a guarded stance and scans the visible perimeter or where they stand.

Kip picks up pick up faint hints of movement in the mist, first to the left, and then ahead of him. Something is out there, and getting closer.

A quartet of four-meter long insectoids, with hundreds of flexible body segments that enables them to propel themselves effortlessly through the soft mud and water of the swamp, charge the party. The creatures' upper bodies sport two long glistening claws. The carapaces of the creatures are a deep purple with streaks of pale blue along the back. Multifaceted eyes and two long antennae provide excellent sight and tracking.

BX's combat routine kicked in automatically, his aiming heuristics determining the best angle of fire as he raised his blaster rifle.
The weapon discharged bright bolts of energy into the nearest insectoid punching into it's carapace.

One of the bolts shears off one of the creature's antennae. Its carapace is holed in several spots, but it remains on its 'feet' and veers straight for BX. The droid succeeded in getting its attention, whether intended or not.

V'Jax

V'Jax takes notice of the one BX shot as it veers towards the droid. He hopes to save his little friend from harm and, possibly, deter the other creatures if he is able to bring this one down. His shot hits and takes down the large insectoid. Unfortunately, this fails to deter the other three, who close and attack.

One of the creatures pounces on Joran, slashing him with both forelimbs. The claws open up a pair of deep wounds. Fortunately for the team's medic, the blood that sprays out of the gashes flushes the venom coating the limbs before the poison has a chance to enter his bloodstream. He merely feels a tingling in the area from residual neuroparalytic.

Another creature lashes at Sandra, but misses her as it appears to be distracted by the blaster fire of her comrades.

Kip steadies himself to receive the charge of the attacking insectoid, shouldering his rifle and getting a shot off a split-second before the creature reaches him. Unfortunately, his aim is rushed and he misses.

Sandra desperately backpedals from the creature in front of her, quickly sighting down the barrel of one of her pistols as she pulls the triggers of both weapons. Bolts ionize the already-steamy air around her attacker, failing to connect with the insectoid but nonetheless partially obscure her from its view.

Joran jumped squatted down for a moment hoping to get out of the way of the insectoid's claws. Crouched, he opened up a pocket on his vest and pulled out a pack of Stims. He stuck himself and he could already feel the pain from his gashes subsiding. He stood up as the insectoid reared in front of him, reached out with his hand and jabbed Kip with a Stim as well.

Sandra takes careful aim and drills the insectoid in front of her with bolts from both of her pistols, punching through the chitin and vaporizing the tissues underneath, leaving numerous small smoking holes but not quite killing the creature — or even slowing it down.

I could have chosen to hit with the second claw instead of poisoning, but that's worse: it drops him and crits him.

The creature in front of Sandra steps forward and slashes her with a forelimb, cutting through her flight suit and drawing blood from a deep wound. Fortunately, the material of her suit is so tough that punching through it scrapes most of the venom off of the claw leaving too little to affect her.

Seeing a vulnerability in the insectoid attacking Sandra, V'Jax fired shot after shot at the beast, hoping to bypass its armor and hit some vital organs. Sandra swerves to avoid the creature's second claw, bringing her into the path of his fire at just the wrong moment and a blaster bolt slams into her back instead of striking the creature at the spot V'Jax had been aiming for.

The insectoid attacking Kip deeply slashes the Twi'lek with a forelimb, but in the process of chasing the backpedaling Kip it gets its other limbs tangled in tree roots hidden beneath the surface of the swamp. The creature stumbles, momentarily going down into the muddy, churned up water before rising once again out of the water. The very brief respite allows Kip to get a few steps out of the immediate reach of its forelimbs.

Kip took the chance offered him by fate or the Force or dumb luck and fired his blaster rifle at the monster in front of him hitting it with bolt after bolt...until the beast's arms and legs twitched violently and it fell to the ground dead.

Joran felt his muscles twitch before they hardened and froze him in place. His eyes darted about hoping to see others had noticed his helplessness and anything that might help in this situation.
"Why are they attacking us here?" Joran asked desperately to himself.
