Story
Ari was born shortly before the outbreak of the Clone Wars on Brentaal IV, the youngest child and only daughter of the wealthy entrepreneur Nicolo Van Ryn and his wife Yvette. Among the many investments of the Van Ryns, one that was to ultimately prove fatally problematic was a minority interest in a shipping company that did extensive business with worlds that were to break away and join the Separatist side in the conflict that would engulf the galaxy and forever alter the lives of trillions of beings.

After the end of the war, with the rise of the New Order, the ISB began to systematically investigate all of the Empire's citizens, especially those in the core worlds. The day before her tenth birthday, a security agent leading a squad of stormtroopers arrested Ari's parents and eldest brother Leonidas, dragging them away, never to be seen again. Fearing that they, too, would be arrested, Ari and her brother Jon, at the time visiting friends on Lantillies, fled to the Outer Rim.

Years passed, with Ari and Jon wandering from rim world to rim world, taking what jobs they could as they watched the Empire tighten its grip on the galaxy. Still fearful of Imperial attention, they kept a low profile. Jon, a skilled pilot, was always in demand, and Ari had inherited her father's knack for spotting good opportunities and dealing with people.

Spoiler:
One day while on Nar Shaddaa, Ari and Jon were contacted by a Rebel agent. The Rebels, always short of pilots, offered Jon a commission and a refurbished Y-wing to fly. Ari soon found herself assigned to special operations as a procurement specialist. A couple of more years passed. The Rebel Alliance struck a great blow against the Empire by destroying the Death Star. Ari didn't celebrate; Jon had been a member of Gold Squadron. Ari was now alone, her only "family" the members of her covert cell. Bit by bit, the Empire would pay for what was done to her family. Ari would see to that.

Appearance
At 178cm, Ari is taller than average for a human female. She keeps her nearly hip-length luxurious blonde hair bundled in a ponytail. She has sparkling emerald-green eyes, high cheekbones, and a flawless, lightly-tanned complexion. Her normal attire is a matched pair of tan tunic and pants, the latter tucked into knee-high sturdy black leather hiking boots. She wears a tan and green jacket over her tunic, as the need arises, along with a standard utility belt at her waist bearing a couple of military-style pouches. Her possessions are stashed within a well-worn military field pack, which dates back to the Clone Wars and the Grand Army of the Republic.

Personality
In public, Ari is affable and she's able to readily make a connection with most beings that she meets. She exudes an air of confidence, and will often joke with companions, usually employing biting sarcasm. This belies the turmoil that she keeps deeply hidden. She's lost everyone she loved, her grief is unending, and she won't rest until those that caused her pain and loss are destroyed.

She doesn't care all that deeply about the Rebellion, seeing it as a means to an end, something to help her achieve her personal goals.
Outwardly, she maintains a facade of wanting to restore her family name and position, wishing to break the Empire's stranglehold on business. In actuality, she has no interest in restoring the status quo ante. What she wants is vengeance against those that killed the people that she loved.

Good story. Family guilt by association, a truly tragic occurrence, but something the Empire did on a regular basis. I like the Gold Squadron connection aspect, too. Our live-playing group has a Jawa who survived (ran away) from the Stormtrooper slaughter of Jawas in SW IV. Hardnox's (the Nikto) brother worked for Jabba, you know, likely the one Luke knocked into the Sarlaac Pit (not that I'll ever be able to uncover that info, but I'll continues to search for him.) I really like connections to the core movies.

Thanks. I had to kill off any family that she had left, to cut her off from any attachments (no, she's not going to acquire Force sensitivity; that's not the reason why), and losing someone at Yavin seemed to me a nice touch. I was going to write up how she acquired her rifle, an interesting story in itself, as it used to belong to an Imperial stormtrooper, but after Cael posted that Leemy has one there really wasn't much point in "cluttering up" the backstory with a sideshow.

Spent 15xp to acquire 2nd rank of Smooth Talker.

Also added the holdout blaster that she picked up from our dead employer. To reduce encumbrance, she's not carrying the thermal cloak (leaving it in the V5), so her actual encumbrance walking around is 13/14.
