Pirate's Bay

Postby swrider » Mon Jul 11, 2016 10:05 am

As the Cherenkov Blue departs orbit a relaxed feeling comes over you. The anxiety of visiting a mostly unknown planet and your mission for the Rebels can be left behind. The Rebels will contact you again if they need your help and you now know how to contact them, but for now you work for the corporation. A weeks’ worth of preparation and the best plan was to set a trap for the pirates. Word was put through the normal channels that you would be transporting a valuable cargo to an asteroid research facility in the mid rim. The base itself is now abandoned but it is anticipated that the pirates are monitoring corporate communications. You will arrive there in a few days plenty of time to stew on the impending battle.

"This is what I was able to dig up on the old asteroid base, unfortunately the newest record I could find was only one floor, and at least a decade out of date." MidDen noted to the gathered crewmates as she activated the holoprojecter with a pseudopod. A translucent map appeared, showing the limited knowledge of the dugout tunnels. "I don't know if it's going to become important, but I thought everyone should have an idea of what will be in the area."

The reality of what the crew was about to attempt flushed over Eckhal. They were a small team trying to infiltrate a base. Sure, there were the droids, but they hadn't really been battle tested. He looked to Ari.

"Ari, you've probably had some experience with this before," he said. "How do we approach this?"

Ari grins, and injects a small bit of humor into the process, "Carefully, I would hope."

"The story being told," MidDen continued, "Is that we've been official hired to recover sensor data, and unofficially hired to recover a hidden artifact being stored there. Because we won't have anything of value on our way in, it's unlikely they will attack us then. They know the strength of our ship and our reliance on droids this time. They may, then, try and strike us while we're landed. Or they may wait until we've started our return journey."

The alarm sounds with plenty of warning for the crew to prepare for battle as you exit hyperspace. As the viewports clear a large asteroid field stretches out before the ship. No signs of enemy vessels appear can be seen from the windows and the scanners cannot detect any vessels. The asteroid field itself appears to be interfering with the scanners which can only penetrate to short range. A faint beacon appears on the radar the first in a series of dilapidated relay stations which track the minefield and provide directions to the asteroid base.

The ship makes its way into the asteroid field slowly in an attempt to avoid the numerous asteroids. At first the beacons seem to mark a clear path but numerous smaller asteroids have moved into the area which appears to have been cleared at one point. As the ship passes over third beacon asteroid, several small asteroids collide with the hull knocking the sensors slightly out of alignment. The decision is made to land near the beacon in order to make the quick repairs. As the crew exits the ship a derelict building stands tall before them. Large symbols in graffiti appear on the building's entrance. A closer look will be necessary to determine what they mean, if anything.

Before MidDen could even step off the elevator platform and onto the asteroid, the orange astromech sped off and launched itself onto the side of the Blue, eager to get to work on the damaged sensor system. MidDen stepped out more slowly and carefully onto the low gravity surface and surveyed her surroundings as she made her way forward. By the time she got out and looked up to survey the required repairs, the R-unit was already hard at work. Trusting the droids and her associate’s work, the archeologist turned her attention to the strange markings on the structure.

“There appears to be some kind of markings on the beacon building.” She radioed back to the ship. “I’m going to go check it out.”

derelict building....

Postby DeepSpacer » Sun Jul 31, 2016 3:21 pm

"Just a derelict building....not sure why they're bothering...", says Hardnox snidely to Eckhal,Owyn, or anybody nearby. Perhaps, he just says it under his breath to himself. As it is, he will stand guard on the asteroid's surface, at the entrance of the ship.

As the group approaches the building the graffiti becomes clear. The meaning of the symbols are unrecognizable to MidDen and Ari but 3PX steps forward and announces the graffiti appears to be some sort of computer code. The droid drones on for a while suggesting one of the more computer oriented droids may be able to decipher the code, but its chatter seems completely ignored by MidDen who moved forward to inspect the graffiti more closely.

Spoiler:
MidDen notices that the graffiti itself appears to have been drawn in blood

The droid’s conversation barely registering, MidDen extended a hand forward and lightly touched the bottommost markings. It was a primitive need to see if the organic remains were fresh, even if she knew that the exposure to the vacuum of space would have dried the blood almost instantly.

“This message has been written in blood.” The Ugar stated simply. Although she had no blood in her own body, the situation was close enough to leave her worried. “We should get an R2 unit down here to translate. If this outpost is related to the station we’re headed to, it might contain valuable information. Or a warning.”

After several minutes of documenting and investigating the massive letters and symbols, the weight of the upcoming mission and realization of the inevitable annoyance of the rest of her crew-mates lead MidDen to return to the Blue. She caught the R-unit that had been conducting the repairs before it could head off back to its regular station, and quickly asked it to run the pictures she’d taken through the computer and let her know what it said.

Paranoia slowly sets in. Eckhal feels it from multiple directions. He wants to be able to relax and leave the repairs to the droids. There aren't any complicated fixes necessary, so they can easily handle it. Still, the sabotage efforts of 3PX are very fresh in his mind. He hovers near the R2 unit to supervise it's efforts.

The other source is the irrational concern that these abandoned buildings may not be completely abandoned. He tries to keep himself from looking over his shoulder to see if any strangers are lurking about. People were obviously here at one time, and there is always a chance that someone could be holed up among the rubble, waiting for scavengers to take advantage of. He turns his head and happens sees a figure approaching. He almost jumps out of his boots before realizing that it's just MidDen coming back to the ship.

"Did you find anything interesting?" he says, just as MidDen is handing pictures over to the R2 unit.

Barely moments pass before the R2 unit starts beeping wildly. A holographic image appears before the droid laying out the same facility map you had been given. A new symbol appears and begins beeping rhythmically in the room farthest from the entrance. And an ominous computerized voice speaks in time with the beeping; “Come Friend”.

"That message would be far more welcoming if it hadn't been painted with organic fluids." MidDen noted to the assembled crew. "Still, it might be worth investigating. Cautiously."

The crew loads back onto the ship beginning the last leg of their journey to the mining base. The thick asteroid field is difficult to navigate with the clunky Cherenkov Blue and multiple collisions occur. As you near the end of the beacon two asteroids collide and the smaller is deflected directly at your ship. The pilot droid evades the bulk of the asteroid but a small chunk collides with the hull around engineering venting the atmosphere in that compartment into space and activating the emergency shutdown. Having only thrusters left the pilot angles the Cherenkov Blue into the landing bay of the mining base. From the cockpit the pirate vessel can clearly be seen. It, too, is docked but there are no signs of its crew.

The hull damage will be more difficult to repair but the engine can be restarted easily once inside the engine room. The main difficulty is that the engine room has not life support and opening the doors would vent the atmosphere in the ship out the outside.

Venturing out...

Postby DeepSpacer » Sun Aug 21, 2016 11:50 am

Hardnox will take the lead walking out of the ship (unless we have a reason not to).

Owyn will pull out his General Purpose Scanner and scan for life signs and heat signatures (out to 1/2 km) as he reaches the surface. "It'll be good to know if we have company nearby while we see if repairs are possible."

Ari will join 'Nox and Owyn, bringing along AT-ED and K9, and reluctantly, 3PX (she won't be trusting that droid out of her sight for a long, long time). The droids back on the ship have been instructed to not admit anyone aboard who is not one of the PCs, and under no circumstances is the ship permitted to lift off without Ari and Eckhal aboard (controls locked by voice and code cylinder). Furthermore, the B1 droids are instructed to use the ship's guns to fire on anyone or anything attempting to damage the ship or board without PC permission.

The air in the landing bay feels thin and your lungs strain to fill with sufficient oxygen and you seem to bounce accidentally with each step. The artificial gravity of the base is obviously offline leaving only the asteroids natural gravity to hold you to the ground. The bay itself is employ and the scanners show no life forms, however, the thick stone walls of the asteroid make scanning more than the adjacent rooms impossible. Lights from the Cerenkov Blue cast shadowy illumination high lighting an observation deck above your heads. doorway appears at ground level slightly to the right of the observation deck. a faint glimmer draws your eye to a trail of liquid leading from the pirate ship to the doorway. The walls of landing bay seems to be partially covered in additional computer code.

Spoiler:
those in the landing bay each take one strain.

Having been caught up in a discussion with one of the J9 units over the meaning and symbolism of the machine-code words left at the previous asteroid, MidDen was the last one to make it to the elevator before it placed them gently onto the asteroids surface. She adjusted quickly to the lighter gravity - aided, perhaps, by the fact that walking was not as instinctual part of her being as it was for her companions. Moving closer to the walls with the quick skip-step useful in low-gravity, the antiquarian positioned herself to better read the huge code letters. Feeling oddly strained from the effort, as though she was not absorbing enough oxygen, the Ugar reached up and activated the internal supply on her suit, just in case.

“Perhaps we should bring one of the astromechs with us - it would be good to have someone who could translate this code.”

As Midden's words float off into the silence of the base the Astromech which translated the code begins to move towards the doorway.

Another astromech droid appears from the ship moving toward MidDen and the code. A beam of light illuminates the wall momentarily as the droid scans the text. A series of beeps and squeals latter and the astromech turns and begins moving toward the door.
