Far Orbit Project (IC)

It is a dangerous time for the Rebel Alliance. Following the Destruction of the Death Star battle station at the Battle of Yavin, the Emperor has ordered the annihilation of those who would oppose his rule. Vast fleets of Imperial ships have been dispatched to the far corners of the galaxy to root out and destroy Rebels wherever they can be found.

In this desperate hour, the Rebel Alliance needs supplies, equipment and weapons to pursue its mission of liberating the galaxy from the forces of tyranny. To further this goal, Mon Mothma and other Alliance leaders have issued Letters of Marque and Reprisal to a select group of private raiding ships: Rebel Privateers.

One of the first privateers to take up the dangerous mission of harassing Imperial ships is the Far Orbit, a captured Nebulon-B escort frigate crewed by a motley collection of Imperial mutineers and former pirates.

The captain of the Far Orbit, Dhas Vedij, was once a capable and respected officer in the Imperial Navy. Now, he has volunteered to spearhead a series of daring strikes into the Ringali Shell, deep in the heart of Palpatine's domain...

< flashback >

Captain Vocis Kenit, captain of the Far Orbit, did not strain against his captors as he was marched down the corridor to a hatch marked EMERGENCY USE ONLY. He was well aware of the destruction that the Imperial-issue blaster could wreak, and he currently had over a dozen of them aimed in his direction.

The captives -- consisting of Kenit, a junior officer and a half-dozen disarmed Imperial Navy troopers -- were herded to the end of the corridor. The leader of the group -- still wearing an Imperial commander's uniform, Kenit noticed -- stepped forward. "Blasters ready," he ordered sharply.

Kenit looked his second-in-command in the eye. "You will all die for this," he said, his voice a monotone. "You know what the Empire does to mutineers. We will hunt you down. Your families will be executed. And you, Commander," the captain spat, "will be subjected to the slowest torture that can be devised."

Commander Dhas Vedij faced his former captain and smiled without humor. "Perhaps," he said. "But you will not live to see it." Turning to his fellow mutineers, he gestured at the group of captives and issued his first command as master of the Far Orbit.

"Put them in."

The mutineers cycled the airlock open. Kenit and the rest of the prisoners, facing a wall of blaster muzzles, stepped reluctantly into the chamber beyond.

The lock cycled back and from his vantage point Kenit could see Vedij grip the release handle. Vedij took a moment to face Kenit and the others in the escape pod. Then he pulled the handle. There was a sharp crack of the docking clamps retracting, and a sickening lurch as the escape pod shot out from the Far Orbit like a falling star.

Kenit was hurled back into the mass of bodies behind him as the pod tumbled into the void.

"Ops: Ship's status?" Vedij asked, leaning back in his chair. He had stripped the captain's ready room of Kenit's memorabilia and personal items, and has thus far left it undecorated. The room was stark and efficient.

"Sir, we are running at skeleton efficiency. The ship is sound and the crew's morale is up, but we can not operate effectively as a combat vessel. We lack the proper crew to fight."

"I see." Vedij mused for a moment. "Plainly we will have to take on crew or abandon the ship. I'd rather take on crew. I need this ship."

"Sir, perhaps the Rebels would buy it," offered the ops officer.

"They might if they had the money. Contrary to widespread reports, the Rebels have very little income. Their raids on our -- excuse me -- on Imperial shipping are limited to destroying isolated freighters and injuring the occasional escort..." Vedij's gaze focused on the far door as he reflected for a moment.

"Now there's an interesting idea," Vedij finished.

"Sir?"

"I think that I've just figured out how to finance our little operation," Vedij said. "We may make the newsnet beamcasts come true, in a manner of speaking.

"Start combat-drilling the crew. We need to come up with working plans for operating in combat with a skeleton crew. See what engineering can do to automate sections where we're short on crew and select decks for mothballing. We are going to have to be on top of our form if this is going to work out. How long until we reach the StarForge Nebula?"

"Eighteen hours, sir."

"Plus seventy-two to find the station, another seventy-two to locate and deal with the people I need. Then perhaps a week of negotiations."

"Sir?"

"You'll see, if you stay," Vedij said. "Otherwise, keep your eyes on the holonews. Get me a full report from all sections. Start weapons testing and shield-load balancing. I want us ready to respond to whatever we trip over and a complete picture of our situation."

"Yes sir!"

Aboard the renegade escort frigate Far Orbit, coming to the end of a nearly day-long journey through hyperspace...

The door to the Captain's Ready Room opens and Captain Vedij walks past the aft viewscreen and towards the center of the Far Orbit's bridge. The forward viewscreen, displaying the mesmerizing blue swirl of the hyperspace tunnel enveloping the ship, bathes the room in a soft blue glow. A half-dozen officers work quietly at their stations, intent upon their various tasks. Upon hearing the Captain's approach, the ship's new Operations Officer, (Senior) Commander Roda Killiri, rises from the center command seat, "We''ll be dropping out of lightspeed in ninety seconds, Sir."

"Set Condition Two. We don't know what may be waiting for us."

"Set Condition Two, aye," replies Commander Killiri. He activates the 1MC, "All hands, set Condition Two."

As status reports trickle in from throughout the ship, the Captain waits impatiently, not saying anything but visibly annoyed at how long the process is taking. Finally, after a full minute passes, Roda is able to report, "All sections report Condition Two, Captain." He braces himself for the Captain's displeasure.

"Thank you, Commander. It's not your fault. We don't have enough crew," Vedij reassures his new "right hand".

The ship smoothly drops out of lightspeed, the view on the forward display showing a spectacular nebula.

Vedij looks at the lieutenant at the sensors station, "Report, mister Sirtis!"

"Scan is clear, Captain. No vessels within sensor range, no objects showing a threat profile, Sir."

"Very well. Begin scanning for the station. Inform me when you locate it. I'll be in my ready room. You have the conn, Commander."

"Commencing search, Sir," replies the SenCom chief.

"I have the conn, aye, Captain," replies Commander Killiri.

Commander Killiri waits patiently for Captain Vedij to exit the bridge before retaking his seat. He takes a moment to breathe in the sight of the nebula. This was why he loved space - try to get a view like this, even from the most affluent condo on Coruscant.
Trusting that Lt. Sirtis was actively scanning for the station, since he was ordered to, he instead looks towards Astrogation.

"Lieutenant Santiago, anything on your star charts that might be of assistance?"

While the Lt. goes about her business, he also makes a point to call down to first Engineering, and then Commander Brenko at weapons control, checking for the umpteenth time that things were in as good of condition as was possible with half the crew missing. This would be a hell of a time for something to go wrong.

"The sooner we take on more crew the better..."

Commander Killiri's voice echoed across the bridge.
"All hands, set Condition Two."

At that moment, Jako had been familiarizing himself with what would now become his post.

"Sec-Con (Security-Control), Switching to Condition Two."

Sighing, at the moment the only had around 20 troopers not including Chief Vern Xorliss. He'd have to make do with what they had. He keyend the comm.

"Listen up Troopers! The ship is entering Condition Two, that means we have to be ready for anything. I want two shifts: ten troopers on standby at all times, out of the other ten; eight will be divided in four squads of two to patrol different areas of the ship and will report their progress every 15 minutes. The remaining two will be assigned on guard duty at the Main Bridge. Is that alright with you Chief Xorliss?"

Xorliss looks to his comlink when it chirps at him, and then around the mess hall at the squad currently dining. He sets his cup of caff down - his third of the day - and responds.

"Aye aye sir."

The comlink returns to his pocket, and he barks out orders.

"Sergeant Vetrac! Corporal Hyrra! Take your teams and sweep the ship - security wants updates every 15. Rorsa, Thyrrin, take up posts outside the bridge."

“Right on target.” Lt. Santiago said quietly as the Far Orbit slipped out of hyperspace. For a second she let herself and her small team savor the Navagator’s victory of a perfect arrival and the beauty of the location they’d arrived in. As the moment ended, she turned back to the team in her section. At this instant, she section didn’t appear understaffed, but it was a trick of planning - everyone left in Navigation was sitting there right now - she’d insisted on having a full crew when they translated back to realspace, just incase.

“You heard the captain, we’re at Level Two.” Irene started, bringing their attention back to her. “Tycho, get the NavCom warmed up and find me a couple of empty systems near by. I want it to be ready to start the calculations for light speed if things get hot. Lowell, get me any system and planetary data SenCom is picking up and log it into Realspace Navigation.”

"Lieutenant Santiago, anything on your star charts that might be of assistance?”

“I’m afraid the shadow port didn’t log with the Station Bureau, Sir.” Irene returned with a note of jovial sarcasm while she started plugging away at holo-map of the system on her navigation display. “I’m working on a search pattern that should speed things along, but a lot of it’s going to be luck and keeping our eyes open. I'll have the flight path up for you in ten, sir.”

Killiri purses his lips to the sarcastic reply, but he can't argue with the answer - it was a long shot to begin with.

"Very well. Helm, align course with the search pattern, full speed."

He settles into the command chair, watching the assorted holographic displays tick away as time passes and new information is processed. His fingers begin to drum against the armrest, until he notices the tick and mentally corals his wayward digits.

-

Hours later, Lt. Sitris breaks the silence.

"Sir! I think I've found something."

Roda rouses, setting down the datapad he'd been pouring over to physically make his way to the sensors station.

"Good work." He keys his comlink. "Captain, we've found the station."

Vedij replies, "Very good, Mister Killiri."

He leaves his ready room and enters the bridge, moving to the SenCom station. "Nicely done, Mister Sirtis. I'd say that you've earned your pay today, except that none of us are getting paid anymore. So your drinks are on me instead," the Captain smiles down at the young officer.

Stepping over to the center seat, Vedij says to the ops officer, "I have the conn, Commander."

"Captain has the conn, aye," Roda acknowledges, relinquishing the seat.

Seating himself, Vedij orders, "Mister Ross, set course for the station. Do not engage engines."

"Course set, Captain, thrusters at station-keeping, Sir."

"Mister Sirtis, open a channel to that flight of snubfighters heading towards us. It's time to make nice." On the forward viewscreen a tiny fuzzy speck rapidly expands into a close-up of an approaching flight of four Y-wing fighters as the SenCom chief sets the image magnification to maximum.

"Channel open, Sir."

"This is the Far Orbit, Captain Dhas Fenoep Vedij commanding. We have no hostile intentions." With the inter-ship communications channel still open, Vedij snaps an order at the Weapons officer, "Mister Brenko, power down main batteries one and two. Set point-defense batteries to standby."

Addressing the patrol again, Vedij states, "We request escort to StarForge station and permission to dock."

A male voice replies gruffly, "State your business, Far Orbit."

Vedij replies, "We desire to take on additional crew, replenish supplies, and I'm certain that most of my crew would enjoy sampling what entertainments your station can provide."

A long moment passes before there's a reply, "Welcome to StarForge, Captain. You are to follow us in. Please do not deviate from our course, keep your weapons powered down, and do not engage any targeting systems. You are being tracked and the station has more than sufficient power to blow you to bits." The channel closes before Vedij can thank them, the starfighters doing a smart flip-over and heading back the way they came.

"About the greeting I expected. They must not like Imperials much," Vedij chuckles. "Mister Ross, follow them, please. Mister Jonafi, Mister Santiago, Mister Killiri, you're with me. Mister Brenko, you have the conn. Prep a shuttle and have chief Xorliss meet us at Docking Bay One."

"I have the conn, aye," Brenko acknowledges. He stands and relays the orders to the crew. "Helm, standby and prepare for docking. Flight officer Solen, prep the Grek-class shuttle in bay one for launch. Chief Xorliss meet the captain and other officers in docking bay one. Go alone. Bring a weapon but keep it low key. We want a warm welcome, not a firefight." Brenko's heart soars as he issues the orders. Finally, a taste of command!

"Aye aye Captain." Jona replies before keying the comms once more:

"Troopers we are about to arrive to StarForge station, Chief Xorliss and I will be leaving as escort for the captain on a transport shuttle. Petty officer Veltrac, the ship is in your hands. All units shall remain on alert. That is all."

After this, he stood up from his post. He was still wearing his padded armor; he would need to requisition an officer uniform as soon as he could...

"Oh and Chief Xorliss: if you'd be so kind as to allowing me to borrow one of the platoon's carbines; this would be very much appreciated." Of course, he still had his blaster strapped to one of his legs, but it never hurts to go prepared.

With this done, he deactivated his comm and followed the Captain of the Far Orbit.

Killiri follows the captain.

-

CPO Xorliss, again, sets down his drink to answer his com.
"Aye aye. Sir, if you would forward that request to the armory officer, and send a signature..."
The chief makes his way towards the armory regardless to draw a carbine. Being Condition 2 he already has his own rifle slug sharply under one arm and is armored in his blast vest and helmet. Assuming Lt. Jonafi can get the request squared away, Xorliss heads next to the docking bay.
He looks to the gathered officers and, since they're still on the ship, offers a crisp salute.
"Gentlemen."

After arriving to the designated hangar bay.
The Lieutenant salutes in response before adding "As you were Chief."

After politely recieving the carbine, Jonafi quickly looks over the weapon: Checking the state of energy cells, blaster-gas, stock and barrel's condition. Before lowering the weapon, satisfied.

Noding his thanks he states:
"Good man. I'll make sure to fill any required petitions as soon as we return."

Flight Officer Solen ferries the party of officers and Chief Xorliss over to StarForge station without incident. Vedij instructs everyone, including Daronn, to debark. The six ex-Imperials are met by station security and given a run-down of the rules:

  • No Heavy Weapons. Sidearms are allowed, but longarms, repeaters, and explosives are prohibited. Purchases of such weaponry must be delivered sealed, and escorted to the buyer's ship or shipper by station security. Anyone caught with outlawed weapons is summarily spaced.
  • No killing. Except in self-defense or in prearranged duels, killing is prohibited. The penalty for committing murder is death or permanent exile (depending on the judgement of station security).
  • No beatings. Fair fights and duels aside, beating somebody up for no good reason will get you kicked off of the station.
  • No stealing. Anyone who survives being caught for theft is permanently exiled.
After being told the rules, the new arrivals are free to roam the station. Vedij orders those in the party carrying long arms to stow them in the shuttle.

After making sure that they aren't violating station rules, Vedij leads the group to the Lean Nuuti Bar and Grill. He informs his officers that this is where a party of six (hence why Solen is along) are supposed to meet a representative of the Rebel Alliance, an Ithorian, after ordering flangth and ootoowergs with Shasa ale.

The Lean Nuuti Bar and Grill is everything you would expect from a leisure hall on a pirate space station: dank, grubby, dark, and filled with unsavory individuals from every corner of the galaxy. Bad Rodian music is blaring from a broken autojuke in the corner, as several pirates are jostling each other over a game of holodarts. There is no Ithorian visible. The group of humans is being eyed suspiciously by all of the non-humans in the room. The group finds a table and have little choice but to wait.

Sr Cmdr Killiri waits patiently as instructed, willing to follow his Captain's lead. He also doesn't seem disturbed by the glares of the aliens in the bar - he's confident that each and every one of the alien scum know that starting trouble with an Imperial Warship would be the last decision they, or their families, ever made; nevermind the Far Orbit isn't at full strength, they don't know that!

-

Chief Xorliss is far more uneasy about the whole situation; both being forced to leave his only weapon on the shuttle, which doesn't rate a guard, and being forced to interact with officers so far above his paygrade it borders of ludicrous. If he knew he was going to have to interact with them anyway he would have taken the pay raise and the promotion!
As such, he eyes the sketchy aliens in the room uneasily, trying to figure out who the leader of the riff raff is... who he'd need to headbutt into submission to prove his dominance if a bar fight breaks out. While he does this, he awkwardly sits in the chair, arms folded across his chest.

Lieutenant Jako cursed internally. He should have predicted something like this. Now out of the two guards he was the only one armed.

If things went wrong he'd have to quickly try and disarm any opposition. If not possible he'd have to cover the party, as he was the member with the most protective armor at this moment, while the chief escorted them back to the shuttle.

They were not in the best position right now... All he needed to do was trust their captain and hope nothing went wrong.

Outwards; Jako wore a serious face with his arms crossed standing near the captain.

Roda clears his throat.
"Have you had flangth before, Captain? I have heard it described as rather... unpalatable." He glances around the cantina, taking in the assorted offerings... and trying not to listen to the "music."
His hands fold together neatly in his lap, never far from his pistol. Just in case.
"Ootoowergs were pleasant."
His eyes flicker back to the serving droid during his exchange, fixing it with a hard look, as though he could speed it along through force of will alone.

"Lomin ale will be fine for me, thanks." He smiles at the droid. They may be automata, but he'd found being pleasant rarely hurt.

Order placed, he kept a watchful eye on the rest of the bar. He would occasionally call out beings of interest to the captain with subtle glances or twitches of motion.

"Nothing for me, Thank you." Jako replied waving one of his hands. He was on duty at the moment, and his job was to keep the captain and the other officers safe.

It had nothing to do with the fact that he couldn't handle a drink, no sir, nothing to do with that.

“Spacer’s Caf” added when the serving droid looked over for her drink. It was a calculated choice - to unrefined for your typical officer circles and not hard enough for most enlisted just on shore, it was a common drink of independent spacers, and the kind of drink this kind of establishment likely served a lot of. She also didn’t mind the taste, which helped.

She tried to settle back, but the her long trained habits for acting while in uniform fought against the rougher edge she’d held on to for her time on leave. She found herself distinctly wishing she’d had changed over to civilian clothes, but also knowing that it would just make their party stand out more if she was the only one. With leaning back not working, she settled for resting on her left elbow, leaving her right free to tap impatiently on the holstered pistol.

Vedij gives Roda a sharp look, "I don't expect that I'll be dining here. My order was a code phrase. Watch and learn, Commander. That goes for all of you," the Captain looks around the table, "And keep your hands off of your weapons. I don't want any of you starting any fights."

A few minutes after they place their orders with the serving droid, an Ithorian emerges from the kitchen and says to Vedij that there are no ootoowergs left. "Perhaps you would like to see what's available?"

Vedij follows the Ithorian into the kitchen to negotiate the final deal with the Alliance, leaving the rest of the mutineers at the table to savor the ambiance of the eatery.

"Somehow," Irene quipped as she leaned back, finally starting to figure out how to get comfortable in her Imperial uniform. "I always forget how comfortable the commander, sorry, Captain is in these less savory environments. I spent too many years among officers who wouldn't give an establishment like this a second glance, except, perhaps, to look down at it."
