Episode I
Into the Flames

in media res

Image

On Coruscant, a quartet of nearly-exhausted Jedi Padawans run towards a landing platform attached to one of the city's gleaming towers, fleeing from a droideka sending a hail of blaster bolts their way.

Image

Not far behind the fearsome war machine, two squads of super battle droids move to cut off other avenues of escape. On the platform sits a relatively well-kept YT-2400 light freighter which nonetheless has some carbon scoring and flaking paint. A middle-aged male human directs a couple of ASP droids in the loading of unmarked cargo containers heaped nearby. The droideka's errant shots blast the mechanical stevedores into scrap metal, putting an end to their labors.

flashback

Image

Within one of the great fighter bays aboard the Republic flagship Dauntless, General Rahm Kota speaks to a young Mirialan as technicians and droids bustle about, intent on their work and paying no attention to the two Jedi. The object of the Jedi Master's focus is Varik Aden, a now-masterless Padawan who has recently joined the Rebellion. "Varik, I need you to go to Coruscant and contact Master Piell. You must warn him that it is too dangerous for him to remain there. My sources tell me that the Inquisitorius has become aware of his presence, and that of the other Jedi. It is only a matter of time before they close in. Leave now. Make haste. And may the Force be with you."

Deep in the dim and dirty bowels of Coruscant, two Imperial Inquisitors, garbed in black robes and wielding red sabers, along with a quartet of droideka, several MagnaGuards, and an entire company of factory-fresh bluish-grey super battle droids descend upon a secret gathering of Jedi survivors of the Purge. Unsurprised, and moving with supernatural haste, Jedi Knights Sha Koon, Jax Pavan, and Laranth Tarak flee in separate directions drawing immediate pursuit by most of the droids. Padawans Varik Aden, Zuupa, Ren Rall'Entleck, and Kirin Shan together head off in yet another direction, as Master Piell gallantly remains behind to cover the young ones' escape. The short, battle-scarred Jedi warrior fearlessly engages the dark servants of the Empire in saber combat. Unfortunately for the apprentices, one of the droideka and a couple of squads of battle droids notice them and give chase.

Image

cut to the present

The Jedi have been running for their lives for quite some time, hence the exhaustion that will soon begin to set in. They have gone from the undercity up through a tower, in a running defensive fight against the faster droideka, unable to close with and engage it without being swamped by both its firepower and that of the eight B2 droids (two minion groups) following behind. The droideka easily keeps pace with the Jedi, periodically planting itself and laying down withering fire until the B2s catch up. The Jedi quickly realized that whomever/whatever is remotely controlling the droids knows enough about Jedi to make their use of Force powers against the droids exceedingly difficult.

Spoiler:
Each Jedi has accrued 2 strain from their exertions. A ImageImage Knowledge (Warfare) check reveals that the droids are using standard military leapfrog tactics. A second ImageImage Knowledge (Warfare) check reveals that once the fugitives reach open spaces they will be subject to aerial pursuit and attack, which will quickly be the end of them. (Hence why you've been fleeing inside a tower, though you're about to run out of room to run.)

Yes, that's Jaico's ship, the Bloodstripe. And, yes, that's him standing outside and now shocked to discover that he's caught downrange in a free-fire zone in what should have been a safe, upscale location. Making matters worse, the valuable cargo strewn about belongs to Ziro the Hutt, which the smuggler was hired to take to Nar Shaddaa. M3-D1-C is inside the ship, fiddling with something in the engine room rather than helping Jaico, much to the human's annoyance. The droid works for the Hutt, and was tasked with keeping an eye on Jaico and making sure that the cargo gets delivered. Oddly, the droid seems to not take his duties to the Hutt as seriously as Jaico would have expected, a minor blessing in Jaico's view.

Running along side her fellow Padawans, Rosmias ran through the spectrum of emotions. Fear, Pride, Longing, Sadness, Happiness, Joy, Sorrow, Pain. Wasn't it just yesterday that she was first meeting Aayla Secura? And only this morning when she was first handed her lightsaber? How did this day end so badly? Get yous head in dha moment, clear yous thoughts. Focus on dha clankers, she thought in broken Gungan basic. She couldn't help but laugh. She all but broke the habit of those vocal mannerisms, but couldn't shake them in her mind.

The blaster bolt over her shoulder brought her into the present and reminded her of the loss they had all just suffered. Mesa am tried from all of disa blasted runn, she screamed inside to the Force. Spotting a YT, Rosmias changed direction to intercept. Sprinting the last 10 meters, she shouted as politely as she could "Please help us, please" taking a brief look back over her shoulder, before sprinting up the ramp, into the relative safety of the ship. Only once she was inside did she catch her breath and look around. She could still hear the screams in her ears of all the Jedi that were lost. Nosa more dead Jedi.

Spoiler:
Maneuver: Run to the ships ramp
Action: Take a second maneuver without strain.
Maneuver: Run up ships ramp to enter ship

Ren sprinted along side the others. Why do the masters always insist on meeting in open places? A blaster bolt from the pursuing droids yanked his attention back to the present. Legs aching from constant running, head pounding from the mental exertion of maintaining his senses at a heightened level he presses forward. These droids are smarter than we give them credit for. he things to himself. "They're herding us. Leapfrogging each other to keep the pressure on." he tries his best to warn the others while gasping for air. "They're probably trying to push us into the open where we won't have any cover!".

As they break into the open Ren sees what just might be their salvation. "The force guides us!" he exclaims as he continues his sprint. Ahead, Ren sees a ship and the crew loading cargo. Unfortunately the droids aren't far behind as their blasts fly past and tear into the cargo under the YT-2400.

Dropping his defenses Ren focuses his mind and pushes his aching legs towards the ship as fast as he can. The man loading cargo is athletic and moves with precision. He's no dock hand. I hope he's the captain. As Ren approaches the man he slides to a halt he reaches out with the force. Touching on the man's protective and fatherly instincts Ren says "Help us escape. Get us away from Coruscant."

Ren's Force-assisted entreaty doesn't elicit immediate sympathy from the human. Perhaps it's that the Jedi just brought a literal world of hurt to his figurative doorstep in their wake. Perhaps it's that the human's cargo is (mostly) still on the landing platform and his labor droids are a burning, sparking ruin. Or perhaps it's that he's just not yet processed how quickly his life has just changed and is in shock at being shot at by a small horde of Imperial battle droids firing with murderous abandon. Or maybe this human simply isn't weak-minded.

Spoiler:
Ren acquires 1 Conflict for his attempt to manipulate the human. And another strain.

Jaico stands by the boarding ramp of the Bloodstripe, overseeing the ASP Loader droids performing their task with mindless dedication. Wonder what Veyrin'd think of me now? It's like when we played Hunters and Smugglers as kids, but -

His absent-minded reverie is rudely interrupted by the unmistakable shriek of blaster fire, and the realization that an errant bolt has turned one of the droids into a scrap of slag. Clankers chasing...Jedi? No, they're kids! Before Jaico is able to react further, he sees two of the winded Jedi sprint aboard the Bloodstripe, and hears - or is it senses? - a cry for help.

This was supposed to be a blue milk run! Though he doesn't know exactly what's going on, he figures two things are true: firstly, that one of the groups seems far less likely to care about keeping him alive; and secondly, Ziro is going to be mad as a mynock for losing his cargo.

Still, dying for the Hutt wasn't on the list of things he'd planned on doing today.

Jaico's veteran instincts kick in immediately. "Get inside, now!"

Dashing into the cockpit, Jaico flips on the internal comms system. "M3, we've got clankers on the dock, and they're not friendly - we've got to haul jets!"

Almost tumbling into the pilot's seat, Jaico immediately begins coaxing the YT-2400's systems to life with accustomed ease.

Spoiler:
Maneuver 1: move into the Bloodstripe
Maneuver 2 (2 strain): move into the Bloodstripe's cockpit
Action: begin booting up the Bloodstripe

Kirin trails along a bit behind the others, the blue-white blade of his lightsaber flashing in his hand as he ran. He was tired and worn down from the constant running and fear but he kept his senses attuned, helping guide his movements away from the line of fire whenever the pursuing droideka stopped to lay down fire. "I really should have listened to Master Haph and practiced more on moving things...how did he make it look so easy?" he thought to himself as he ran, "Pickup a half-dozen droids, slam them together, pursuit ended. Well, not like I was lazy, just too many other things to study as well."

When they rounded the corner and saw the YT-2400 his heart leaped, finally, a break! Maybe... "Run for it!" he yelled and pushed himself harder to catch up with the others. He skids to a halt at the bottom of the ramp and waits for the others to board.

Maneuver 1; Run - maneuver to bottom of the Ramp

The super battle droids close to point-blank range of Varek. A blaster bolt from one group gets past his whirling lightsaber and burns through his robes and flesh to dig a deep wound in his left shoulder. His Jedi discipline holds and he ignores the pain.

The remainder of the battle droids send bolts flying towards Kirin, but none come near the young Jedi, though the intensity of their fire is so great that the droids themselves are partially obscured by the glowing bolts.

Varek winced and kept his blade spinning to protect him from the barrage of blaster bolts coming from the B2 battle droids. Anger came easy to him and it had helped get this far but Varek refused to let it cloud his judgement. He knew he wouldn't last long against so many droids. He ran for the ship. Kirin was still there at the bottom of the ramp. Varek would have a hard time living with himself if he lost any more Jedi on his mission. "You're not a Knight, just a Padawan way out of his depth," Tarek reminded himself.

Blaster bolts rained down on the platform but Varek managed to get to the ship.

He ran up the ramp and shouted at Kirin. "Get in the ship!"

In Engineering, M3-D1-C gently drops the circuit he was tinkering with. "Triage: Hostile droids inbound, not visible. Status: No current duties. Updated Status: Defend ship. Action: Head to ventral guns. Observation: What has Ziro got in those crates that so interests the droid's owner".
Upon reaching the access ladders, he encounters some young, armed, Jedi. "Triage: Hostile droids inbound, not visible. Young Jedi, one wounded. Status: Defend ship. Action: Head to Ventral guns. Observation: Jaico, you might have mentioned passengers."
M3-D1-C heads down the ladder.

"Alright, kids - hope you're all inside, because I'm not waiting any longer." Jaico's voice crackles through the Bloodstripe's comm system, and he smiles to himself briefly as he the flight computer hums to life.

The loading ramp hisses as the pneumatic cylinders draw it close, and the Bloodstripe begins its take-off maneuver amidst the flurry of blaster fire from the droids below. Well, what's a bit more carbon-scoring, anyhow?

"Better hold on tight!" The Bloodstripe's ion engines flare a brilliant blue as Jaico pushes the throttle to maximum, accelerating the light freighter at an alarming pace. Despite its bulky durasteel frame and ungainly silhouette, the Bloodstripe begins a rapid withdrawal from the loading dock.

"You Jedi who're on board - find a way to make yourself useful. Until we burn enough space to see lines, we're not out of this yet!"

As Jaico lifts the ship, removing the obstruction to sensors from the surrounding towers, a warning indicator begins to flash on his console: aerial contacts on an intercept course at extreme range.

"Captain, this is Varek. I'm manning your dorsal cannons. Thanks sir..." Varek's voice crackled over the internal comms system to the bridge.

"Hell'uva way to make new friends," Varek mumbled to himself.

M3-D1-C pulls himself into the gunnery position, where its body fails to mould to anything like the shape of the seat. It readies the guns, preparing to shoot at the aerial contacts when they come into range.

Rosmias extracts a stim from her belt and jabs Kirin with it, the concentrated bacta and painkillers rushing through his bloodstream to almost immediately start to regenerate damaged tissue and dramatically reduce her companion's discomfort.

As Jaico puts distance between the Bloodstripe and the droids below, whose bolts impact harmlessly against the ship's aft shield, the pair of unidentified aerial contacts on his scan rapidly close in.

The enemy is now at long range. Top of the init order, turn #3.

"Thanks Ros, that should keep me going for awhile, now lets see if I can help." Kirin says as he staggers towards the engine room and keys his Comm as he moves, "Captain, I'm going to see what I can do to keep us flying for a bit longer. Once you shake whatever is coming, can you get us to Mandalore? I have family there who can help us and maybe even cover your losses for re-directing your travel plans."

"Great - for those of you who've just come on board, I'm Jaico. You may have already met M3." As he finishes his sentence, Jaico glances down at the sensors, now displaying two red dots flashing menacingly in unison.

"But enough introductions - we've got aerial contacts, at long range. Mandalore's not a half-bad idea."

Though we'll have to make a few in between jumps first - no way I'll be able to make the calcs for a straight shot in these conditions. But the kid doesn't need to know that. Still, if he does have family who can help offset the loss of Ziro's cargo...

Jaico shakes his head and refocuses. "First, we've got to get out of Coruscant's mass shadow. This ship may not be the fastest, but I've got a few tricks up my sleeve." Jaico grimaces slightly as he feels the G-force from the abrupt turn to change the Bloodstripe's bearing.

Simultaneously, Jaico deftly flips a number of switches, and accelerates the Bloodstripe to a speed it hadn't been designed for. It's no snubfighter, but Corellian engineers know what they're doing.

"I don't know if any of you are handy in a ship or can help me with those Astrogation calcs - if you are, now's not the time to be shy."

After Zuupa entered the Bloodstripe he took his time to calm down, sort out what is emotion what is fact. Catching up with the conversation ...

Staying is out of the window, as much as I would like to help the other Jedis here. Maybe General Kota, it sounded like he got some organised stuff going on.

Stretching out his senses to get the slightest glimpse of where he might be.

Well, this worked better than expected.

On his way buzzing to the cockpit, the Toydarian replys to the Mandalore suggestion. "The General is more like on the other side of the Galaxy in the Outer Rim, but I can not say more at the moment. Although getting away as fast as possible is the most important part now."
Arriving he says with a slight bow "Zuupa, thank you for your help. I'll do what I can but I am no spacer."
