A New Beginning

Postby Quicksilver » Fri Jul 15, 2016 12:43 pm

The yacht Florin curved around the final pier of Port Wander, having journeyed for half an hour since it departed it's former station in one of the many rented landing bays arrayed at the base of the massive station's central towers. The craft moved swiftly and gently through the void, burdened only with a few passengers. These guests occupied their designated compartment, which had been appointed an age ago along the lines of a small sitting room, able to sit half a dozen individuals, or reasonably accommodate twice that. Any such passenger who looked out the port window would finally now be rewarded with a few of the Usury's Reckoning as she stood docked one of the great repair piers.

Onboard the grand voidship, the yacht's designated landing bay nestled in the back of the command tower was abuzz with activity it's occupants got themselves and the location ready for the eminent arrival of the Dynasty's new Rogue Trader. Banners had been drawn up and secured to mounts that arrayed the back wall, and a carpet had been pulled into position to be unrolled. A small assembly of armsmen had arrived, their weapons and boots perfectly shined, to provide a ceremonial guard for the occasion. Top officers and other personal of importance where assembled just to the side of the main door leading deeper into the voidship. The weight of anticipation hung in the air.

Guido put his study of the xenos virus that had necessitated the change in Rogue Traders on hold in order to meet the new dynastic leader. Though he lacked an official uniform or indeed a formal title thanks to his recent acquisition he stood to attention in his fanciest clothes with the other officers as he waited for the event to conclude.

Comenzar Lunation swallowed the feeling of apprehension he felt before disembarking his transport. This was not technically speaking his first trip to the Usury’s Reckoning. Having been responsible for cataloging and tracking the dynasties assets he lead the team that reviewed the ship when it was first acquired. Judging from the outside appearances, the ship has taken quite the beating since then. Comenzar isn’t particularly fond of these ceremonies but understands their importance. The crew needs to know who leads them and he needs to meet the leadership. Disembarking from the shuttle he notices the officers standing at attention and he begins reviewing their personal files in his head. The new crewmember stood beside them, a specialist, learning about the illness that took Terminar’s life.

Moving towards the officers, Comenzar waits at the appropriate greetings are exchanged before telling them to stand at ease.

Starboard cannon bay 5
Two hours ago

Criador leafed through the vellum sheets detailing the gun emplacements. Some of these documents were copies of the original documentation from when the gun decks were built, some were later additions as each refit and change brought out more of the ship´s unique personality. The oldest scrolls were ruinous with age and heavy with waxen seals and strips of vellum detailing refits or modifications.

Looking up at the huge breaches he carefully held up one of the scrolls, aligning the drawings over the mess he could see in front of him as his optical implant adjusted its focus.

"By the forges of Mars, Cease activity!" he yelled over the din of work. watching as the enginseers overseeing the work quickly repeated the shout, the ratings able to be spared from other tasks stopped trying to loosen the massive fastenings holding the firing mechanisms into the rear of the cannon he was working with.

Short on manpower, short on supplies. this new captain had better bring a supply vault and troop transport of ratings with him. he thought a moment, as several others in the rust-red robes of the mechanicus climbed up to the platform.

"Does no-one else check these documents? You were about to depressurize the entire bay." He said in the chittering language of the Mechanicus, the Binary echoing oddly in the vast hall. With the shortage on ratings the ship's systems were being run ragged, and the enginseer prime had pulled many of the senior enginseers back to the enginarium, leaving him with junior members who, while mechanically competent, were above the positions they were used to overseeing. As a result, he had to rush from repair to repair and accidents were going to happen, he was just fortunate to have caught this one.

"Scroll 55, Addendum strip... Octo. Dated 413 M41. Before removing the firing mechanisms, perform the rite of disassembly and the rite of sealant on the breach, lest the atmosphere on the gun deck is lost as the machine spirits are angered.. This second rite has not been performed or performed inadequately, as the seals are not in place."

Some of the ratings looked uneasy as the discussion continued in binary. Being unable to understand what was being said they did not know what would happen, whether punishment, a break or continuation of labour.

Arrival of the Florin
Having set the enginseers to the appropriate rite Criador made his way to the command tower. With his customary rust-red robes still smelling faintly of incense he was holding a muted conversation in Binary with the Enginseer prime of to the side of the other officers when the new rogue trader disembarked.

As the man made his way to the assembled officers Criador waited until the Enginseer Prime, as the formal representative of the Mechanicus on board, had introduced himself before speaking up himself.

"And I am Explorator Militant Criador, by the grace of the Omnissiah serving as Master of Ordnance." He said simply, his implants giving his voice a faint distortion, and offering no explanation as to why a member of the Mechanicus was serving as the man in charge of the gun crews.

From the throng of officers near the door, Eustace watched the new blood carefully. Her hands remained behind her back as the young Lunation made himself known to that crotchety pile of cogs they called an Enginseer Prime. Glancing over to the arranged officers before sweeping her gaze back to Comenzar, the Seneschal caught herself idly wondering if the boy would be able to lead this old vessel. Well, that was his responsibility in the end. All she had to do was balance the books and give advice when it was needed. Her, giving advice... Ha! She'd asked Primero Lunation if he was joking, but one look at his expression told her everything she needed to know.

Well, no time to embrace her newfound mentorship like the present. Stepping smartly out of line, uniform crisp and sharp, she saluted the new captain of the Usury's Reckoning. "Well met, Lord Lunation. I am Eustace Trevelyan, your Master of Coin and Seneschal aboard the Usury's Reckoning. The ledgers are updated and ready for your perusal..."

Her head tilted, and the slightest smirk appeared on her face. "But we can leave such dry formalities for later, can we not? I believe we have a ceremony to complete."

The line of officers continued, with each offering a simple greeting and a report that their particular division was ready and operational, though in many cases inflection provided Comenzar with more information regarding exactly how ready or operational they actually were. Out of the set, however, only two others truly stuck out.

The first was the Navigator’s Liaison, who instead apologized profusely on behalf of House Bayren. She explained that the house had been forced to withdraw the former Navigator, but assured the Lord Lunation that a suitable replacement was in system, and would arrive in a matter of days.

The second was the Primus Astropath who, beside relating the readiness of his choir and department, also related that he had received a message from the Head of the Family, and that it was available for the Rogue Trader when he wished it.

Having done something unusual, allowing all of his officers to greet the new RT first, rather than beginning with himself, Thaddeus salutes Lord Comenzar and then offers a handshake. "My Lord, Captain Thaddeus Jak, in service to you and your family. In addition to overseeing the operation of the ship and its complement, I will also be your personal bodyguard, as circumstances warrant. Your ship and crew await your command, My Lord."

A New Beginning

Several hours later, Comenzar had not only survived, but produced the air of thriving through the commencement rituals and requirements of officially taking over his brother’s position as the Rogue Trader and leader of the vessel. Now well into ship’s evening, dinner has been completed and Comenzar was able to retire to more comfortable surroundings with those whom he wished and finally took to the message his father had sent.

The message was encoded with a family cypher - one that Comenzar had long ago memorized the key to, but was not among the common ones used on the vessel. There was a personal component to the message, expressing his expectations of Comenzar and confidence that he would fulfill those expectations. A few carefully obscured words of encouragement could also be found. In time, however, the message turned to business.

The letter goes on to tell how the last scion of the Tryggve dynasty passed while you were in transit, and they have moved to repossess their remaining assets, few as they were. (Comenzar and Eustace recognize the name as a family that has been content sitting on it’s laurels for the last half-dozen generations, whittling away at the family fortune.) Among the assets are fragments from an old, partly burned log book from the voyages of the second Tryggve. Among the more vague and context-driven statements, Tryggve wrote that he had a warp map and other documents related to the “Svard Endeavor” in a security box on the Damaris Colony.

The letter ends with a politely, but strongly worded suggestion that Comenzar look into the contents of his box and the Svard Endeavor they may be related too.

Comenzar looks to Captain Jak who had been invited to view the communication. Captain have your officers prepare for a possible landing raid and research this “Svard Endeavor”. I want to depart for the Damaris Colony as soon as the ship can be ready.

The Navigator arrived midway through the second station’s day, departing directly from his house’s approaching voidship before it docked with Port Wander. Meeting and welcoming a new Navigator is a peculiar experience even for a seasoned void officer, and this encounter was no different. He arrived suspended in a cylinder of glass and water which was wheeled onto the deck, his robes floating weightlessly around him. Thankfully, proper etiquette had no requirement for physical contact, and the introductions were concluded without issue. Indeed, the Navigator (one of the few who could rightfully address the Rogue Trader as a social Peer) seemed quite social once one got over the apparent mutation.

With the Navigator’s arrival, Captain Jak was able to put into motion the last few requirements for departure, including recalling the secretaries who had been sent to research what they could about the Svard Endeavor. Their report was only notable for their lack of success - they had failed to locate any reference to Svard among charts, shipping documents or navigation stops, ship registries or, indeed, anything. They reported their lack of findings in worried, defensive tones.

Usury’s Reckoning left Port Wander just after the conclusion of the evening meal, its powerful engines pushing it quickly into the void and on its four day journey to a safe way into the Immaterium.

The Maw, gateway of to the Koronus Expanse, was little more than a narrow and erratic pass between two great storms, scattered with every hazard known to man and navigator. Even for those who transverse the void for a living find themselves on edge during the harsh transit. The new Navigator proves his skill, however, as he plots their course and keeps careful watch on shifting storms and tides of the immaterial plane during the vessel's miniscule transits along the trail of isolated safe waypoints, each one begging for a disaster or pirate attack. A mostly unstated wave of relief passes over the population of the ship as the warp-shutters raise on the voidports to reveal the angry burning red of Furibundus' star, announcing their arrival in the Expanse. They had made it through the gauntlet with no damage a strong will and strong backs could not solve.

But the massive, amalgamated station of Footfall was not the Reckoning's destination, and she did not take the journey in to its scattered dockyards. Indeed, the ship only drifted long enough to take the necessary readings, vent the warp drives and charge the Geller field before aligning to sail deeper into the Expanse. The path to Damaris was as well-known as anything in the Expanse and drifts far less deadly, thus they were able spend much longer in the Immaterium between charting stops during this portion of the journey. Several more days, much less tense than those that came before, passed until the massive vessel reentered reality in the Forsellis System with a final lurching crack. The Colony of Damaris was still a few days away, but the rest of the journey would be entirely under the power of the Reckoning's mighty plasma drives.

Eustace stood, arms behind her back as she watched the stars from the safety of the bridge. She'd spent most of the trip poring over the ship's ledgers, writing here, excising there, calculating this, cogitating that...

With her, tucked safely under the arm of her jacket, she had the documentation that she could find for the financial situation of Tryggves. Comenzar would no doubt want a briefing, she simply had to find the time to see him.

Although the Usury's Reckoning was still covering the last thousands of kilometers to dock with the Bulwark, Lord Comenzar and his selected advisers had already arrived on the planet below. A crisp autumnal wind did it's best to cut through their clothes during their brief moment on the tarmac as the group descended from the Lord's yacht and loaded themselves in his limousine.

As the car pulled out into the streets and started to slowly push its way through the pedestrian-covered streets of Damaris City, the Lord and his assembled advisers and agents would have a moment to consider the approach they would take upon their arrival at the Central Bank.

During the blessedly speedy warp voyage Criador had spent most of the time continuing the work around the gun galleries. though nearly all structural work had been finished during their layover at Port Wander.
What was not finished, given their speedy departure, was the decorative work. When the rogue trader boarded, the large halls were filled with bare steel stained with grease and smoke from the work. welding and rebuilding of the various catwalks filling the air with sparks and smoke to mingle with the incense from the mechanicus.

Now, they gleamed. polished steel and brass glinted in the lights from the shuttered windows. the various motifs decorating the breaches of the guns gilded, and pendants bearing the emblems of house lunation waved faintly as the air recirculators kept a flow of breatheable air coming. During one of the stopovers to take measurements of the warp conditions Criador had even sent men out in voidsuits, and now the iconography on the outside gleamed like silver as the ship approached the station.

Criador, however, was not present at his usual station on the bridge. Instead he was coming along with the new rogue trader. As the group disembarked he took a moment to look out over the landing area and the colony beyond, the autumn wind tugging at the rust-red greatcoat of his battleplate before he took his place inside the limousine.

After some time, the vehicle having moved into the light traffic from the spaceport, he turned his head to look over the others, talking to the rogue trader but adressing the group.
"Lord Comenzar, what is your intent when we reach the central bank? Do we have an alternate plan if they refuse us access? We may have the might of a warrant of trade behind us, but in the expanse some might feel they have a mightier dynasty watching their backs, or simply not care."

Before leaving the limo, Comenzar looks at his entourage. “We will attempt to do this in a civilized manner. We have the documentation that we are repossessing the estate and will ask the bank to hand release the vault to our control. If they fail to corporate, the captain here will return to the ship and bring back a raiding party while we continue negotiations. Use your imitative captain if you feel things are going badly.”

Jale nodded at the Lord Captain and stroked the steering wheel affectionately. One of the many perks of the new job was driving some obscenely fancy vehicles, and Jake was loving it. This one's engine purred like kitten but kicked like a grox, and she could get them out of trouble right quick if needed.

The guards at the bank looked like they meant business, and Jake knew enough about Rogue Traders to know you could never predict what one would do. So keep your head low, and your foot on the accelerator, ready for anything.

The doors to the bank opened to reveal an impressive interior of marble and polished wood that spoke impressively of the bank's success and strength.  Those with an eye for commercial detail, however, note that the vast majority of the decoration is clearly of local origin with an effort to obfuscate the lack normally imported work and materials.  The more security minded individuals have their eyes drawn to withdrawn and concealed security doors and alarm systems.  The bank's arrangement was such to naturally usher a humbled individual to the line of tellers arrayed along one side of the room.  Arrayed on the other side of the main room, however, was a series of plush leather chairs, desks and tables for those with more complex business then simple monetary transactions.

Sensing the importance of the individual who had just entered, a secretary quickly departed from her place among the bankers and moved up to intercept Comenzar.

"Welcome to Damais Central Bank, Sir.  How may we assist you today?"

Comenzar looks at the secretary as she approaches, silently wondering what is the best way to handle the situation. After listing to the secretary’s questions Comenzar responds “I shall speak with the individual in charge of the security boxes, my business is with them.”

"Of course, Sir. Follow me." the secretary passes Comenzar and Eustace off to a banker who greats them heartily and talks quickly, seemingly intending in telling them all of the great features and illustrious, if short, history of the Damais bank. Thankfully, he does make steady progress towards the security box vault while he does this. Arriving in the intended room, somewhat deeper into the bank's main structure, the talkative man swings himself around the far side of a standing desk and comes to the immediate point, asking the Rogue Trader which safety deposit box he can help with.

The banker takes the papers once they are presented and studies them with a reading glass while muttering what an unusual situations this is, very unusual. Thankfully for Comenzar however, it is not unprecedented, and after spending a few minutes to determine that the documents in question were genuine, the Banker agrees to allow them to access the box in question. He unlocks one of the recessed wall safes next to the desk and selects a key from among several dozen other seemingly identical ones identified only by some encoded numbering system. The key is handed to the Rogue Trader.

The banker then leads them though a heavy volt door into a box-lined room and points out the particular box that was indicated on the documents before excusing himself so they may have the appropriate privacy.
